KYRC started by Colin Kaepernick is a non profit with a mission to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders. They do this by providing programs for youth in cities like Atlanta where they invite speakers to teach progressive subjects like coding, civil rights, and financial literacy.

“Remember that consciousness is power. Consciousness is education and knowledge. Consciousness is becoming aware. It is the perfect vehicle for students. Consciousness-raising is pertinent for power, and be sure that power will not be abusively used, but used for building trust and goodwill domestically and internationally. Tomorrow’s world is yours to build.”

–Yuri Kochiyama

Most BLPOC relate to this notion of hyper awareness in how we take up space. We are “other-ed” in society so we are always conscious of being different in a room thus we are super accommodating to others so we don’t bring attention to ourselves. White people being the populous and considered the “default” don’t experience this sense of “other-ing” as much so they aren’t as aware of how they take up space.

This is important in how we uplift each other and amplify voices. POC still need to be accountable just as much as white people in how we foster space. If you see a WOC being ignored in a place of discussion, call that out and silence others to give them time to speak. In Black spaces where Black culture is being shared like in Lindy Hop classes, be active in giving Black people the spotlight and listen intently without preconceived ideas because whatever you think you know is likely wrong.

Space is so important that even from what I’ve learned about Black dances so far, there is usually some semblance of non verbal spacial communication. Dance floors are crowded and you wanna dance without smacking each other, there are moves that function to politely claim space. POC have a responsibility to amplify Black voices and one way of doing that is consider what space we provide and consider what space is appropriate for us to take up. I still struggle with considering where I should take up space especially because of the privilege I hold as a straight Asian American man.

Consciousness is power. Space is power. Be conscious of space and be willing to share, that way we give power to those most in need.
