เจ๋ง means "cool" or "rad" in Thai.

One form of neo–colonialism is gentrifying outside cultures without respecting the people that created that culture first. Right now, because of COVID–19, hate–crimes against Asian Americans have increased despite, according to Forbes, 17% of doctors, 9% of physician’s assistants and 10% of nurses are of Asian descent in the United States, and doctors from Wuhan are traveling to help Italy after controlling the virus in its origin city. Before COVID–19, people celebrated Asian culture from the Parasite winning an Oscar nomination to the first Vietnamese woman to be crowned Mrs.World. It shows how quickly people are willing to alienate Asian Americans, breaking the "model minority" myth.

Eastern glyphs and symbols are often appropriated by colonizers, one example being Chinese and Japanese kanji and now in contemporary times, Batok tattoos from the Philippines. By lettering and illustrating Thai characters in my style, I'm taking ownership of what I perceive my culture to be by popularizing images of the Thai language before the glyphs become appropriated as the "next new fad” by those who have no connection to the culture.

The irony is that me learning more about my language and creating art involving my language is in a way Westernizing the culture, creating my self portrait of a bastardized child being born in Thailand but raised in the US.
Making art like this is empowering to me as an artist and as a Thai immigrant. It’s also really fun to draw something like this because of the challenge. When I had the idea, I honestly thought I’d fail so it’s amazing to see an idea go completely through.

According to the Asian Pacific Policy & Planning council, over 1,100 physical & verbal hate crimes against Asian Americans have been reported over two weeks. Being proud to be Asian American during this time is more important than ever. I’m definitely still proud of my identity and I always will be.

I remember as a kid my parents having this California travel booklet giving a sort–of guide to what to expect if you visit the west coast. During this time, internet wasn't readily available for my parents so this book was all they had to understand what America would be like. I like to imagine them being so excited to move to the US having these images in their mind. Combining auto–motive Chrome lettering with Thai language is one way of visualizing my parents. Because you read through all this, use promo code: CHROME • to get $5 off your order. Thank you.
